Marcus Jones: The Good Soldier

Sometimes, the fighter is so good that it doesn’t matter if his coaching sucks. This is hardly new on the Ultimate Fighter. We saw it with Ed Herman on TUF 3. We saw it with Travis Lutter on TUF 4 (though he was basically coaching himself, given the strange premise of the season). And we saw it with Mac Danzig on TUF 6 (though teammate Tommy Speer also made it to the finals, it was clear that the experience of Danzig drove him to, and through, the entire series). Well, Marcus Jones is… (Full Story)

The Slide Continues: Team Rampage Falls to 0-7

This season of The Ultimate Fighter continues to make history with Team Rampage falling to 0-7 in the opening round. This will make Rampage the first team ever to be in the position to get shut out going into the final match of the first round, and they will (at least) tie for the worst opening round record in the history of the show. Tonight, Matt Mitrione (0-0 MMA) beat the guy Team Rampage seemed to consider their great hope in winning the tournament: Scott Junk (6-2-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC). With… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Episode 6 Recap and Analysis

So, last night was a big win for Darrill “Titties” Schoonover (10-0 MMA), who submitted Zak Jensen (7-3 MMA) with a triangle choke after laying a pretty solid beating down standing up. Really, though, it was a moral victory, who had taken a lot of Rampage’s smack talk seriously. Whether this will be the end of it is debatable (I don’t think it will, and neither does Darrill, from the sound-bites offered last night) but simply being in the second round, along with five of his teammates, gives… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Some Notes Before Episode 6

Well, it’s no secret that Team Rampage is having the worst season in the history of the Ultimate Fighter franchise. They’re the only team to be shut out of the first half of the opening round of the tournament, and there’s a distinct chance that they could lose every fight. After all, team Rampage’s top four pics (Kimbo, Abe, Demico and Wes Sims) have already been knocked off. It seems a done deal that Rampage is going to lose at least one more: Zak Jensen (Rampage’s last pick) seems… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Episode 5 Recap and Thoughts on Stupid

I’m not a Rashad Evans fan, but as this season of the Ultimate Fighter goes on, I find I’m liking “Sugar” Rashad more and more. Still, before I get into the backstage confrontation between Evans and Rampage, I figure it’s worth making a few notes about what happened in the show to help contextualize some of the stupid. Apart from the adolescent crap about jacking it in the shower (which I really don’t care that much about) and the shoulder injury of future Young and the Restless castmember… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Episode 5 Preview and Thoughts

It’s worth making a note, now that the Ultimate Fighter is halfway through the first round, that this season has featured the worst performance by any coach in the history of the franchise. Objective assessments presents that Rampage, as the only coach to open his first four matches without a win, is completely outmatched in terms of the team dynamic. In a pickup game of basketball, this kind of ass whupping is one where you reassess the teams and mix things up a little. Unfortunately,… (Full Story)

Hamill vs. Jones Official

It’s been rumored for a while, but since the news is finally out, it’s worth mentioning that Jon Jones (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will be featuring TUF 3 veteran Matt Hamill (6-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC). Both fighters are on solid winning streaks at the moment, with Jones currently undefeated and posting three straight in the UFC and Hamill on a two fight run. The fight is set to take place on the finale of the Ultimate Fighter 10, set for December 10th in Las… (Full Story)

Kimbo vs. Nelson Shatters SpikeTV Records

This really doesn’t surprise me, and shouldn’t surprise anyone. The program was incredibly well marketed, and that shows in the numbers. The reports appearing this morning assert that the number of household viewers was 5.7 million, with a total of 6.1 million tuning in at some point during the show, which makes it the highest rated program that the UFC has ever broadcast on Spike TV. In fairness, it just barely beat the broadcast of UFC 75, the UFC and Pride unification bout between… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Episode 3 Recap and Analysis

In case MMAOpinion was the first site you visited since moving out from underneath a rock, it’s worth repeating that Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (3-1 MMA) was knocked off last night by favorite “Big Country” Roy Nelson (13-4 MMA), but the fight itself was not a terrible showing for Slice. Kimbo showed up looking, as expected, ready to bang. While there were those who believed he could stand and trade with Nelson, who’s been knocked out before, many expected his standup to be lacking, with… (Full Story)

TUF 10: Episode 2 Recap and Analysis

The biggest story of last nights episode of the Ultimate Fighter will inevitably be the upcoming fight between “Big Country” Roy Nelson (13-4 MMA) and the youtube warrior Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (3-1 MMA). Still, that’s not all that went down and, since it hasn’t happened yet, I’m going to gloss over it and leave speculation (and there will be plenty) for another time. One of the big stories, over the course of the episode, was the dispute between Big Country and the Team Rashad… (Full Story)
