Sengoku Raiden Championship: What Every Fan Should Know

I realize that Japanese MMA is not something that’s followed in the states at nearly the same level it is in, well… Japan. Still, it’s worth taking a look ahead a couple of months to what will be an incredibly exciting event organized by World Victory Road. The organization that puts on the Sengoku events will be putting on a large New Year’s Eve show that, while most fights remain unannounced at the moment, may feature a number of the world’s greatest competitors and definitely merit some… (Full Story)

Ishii and Baroni Workout: Pics

Olympic gold medalist Judoka Satoshi Ishii (0-0 MMA) has been working out withe many MMA legends as he prepares to make his professional debut. He spent time with American Top Team in Florida and now is working out with UFC veteran Phil Baroni (13-11 MMA, 3-5 UFC). Ishii is signed to the Japanese promotion World Victory Road, which runs the Sengoku event. Ishii’s Debut Pushed Back

All appearances suggest that Olympic Gold Medal winning Judoka Satoshi Ishii (0-0 MMA) will not make his professional debut until until November 7th. Ishii is under contract with World Victory Road, which runs its events under the Sengoku banner (the promotion’s next event will be Sengoku 9, which will air the day after Affliction: Trilogy). Ishii is alleged to have had minor hernia surgery and has moved back to Holland, where he is currently training. The debut of Ishii has been highly… (Full Story)

Satoshi Ishii: The Olympic Factor

When I speak optimistically about Satoshi Ishii, people sometimes look at me like I’m crazy. There are a lot of problems with thinking that Ishii is capable of breaking into the top tier of MMA. The first is that his career hasn’t even started. The second is that he’s short, and reputed as a poor striker at this point in his training. The third is that judo has never really been demonstrated as an incredibly effective style with respect to transitioning to full contact (sure, there are a… (Full Story)

Why Satoshi Ishii Will Change Western MMA

When most athletes, coming from other sports, start to try their hand at MMA, there is something to be said for failure, something to be considered in whether or not they will really have any success in a sport that is physically demanding and requires techical versatility. In considering those things, it is difficult ever to assert that a fighter will have a serious impact on the sport as a whole. But if Satoshi Ishii joins the UFC, this will be the easiest prediction I’ve ever… (Full Story)

Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii Wants to Join UFC

Japanese Olympic judokah gold medalist Satoshi Ishii plans to leave Japan and fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) sometime in 2009. Japanese competitors have been rather unlucky as of late in the UFC and WEC, but Ishii’s renowned Judo skills and young age will give him plenty of time to develop into a possible heavyweight contender in the UFC.  It’s possible the UFC will take a chance and sign him so they can develop him, rather than take the risk of him remaining in Japan… (Full Story)
