UFC 91: Sizing up the card’s potential accolades

As we draw closer to UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar, it’s more than easy to remember what has been talked about the most widespread amongst casual and hardcore MMA fans. Without a question, the topic most mentioned has been whether or not Lesnar deserves this fight and cooperatively why this fight is deemed so huge for the UFC. Don’t worry, I’m not going to touch on that subject anymore. Dropping off the radar and being “dumbed down” so to speak, are the rest of the main card bouts that precede… (Full Story)

Did UFC 87 Bring Back the Casual Fan?

I’m not saying that the casual fan has disappeared completely from MMA since UFC 86, but I was interested in UFC 87 because of the names that Joe Silva and Dana White had managed to put on top of the card. We had an ex-WWE wrestler vs. a Pride Veteran, a dominating and lovable French Canadian vs. A hard working All-American boy, and then it’s the Mexican from the hometown (who also graced the cover of ESPN magazine a while back) vs. Fight Finishing Florian. Did it draw the big numbers, or is… (Full Story)

Ken Flo is Machida 2.0

Will other fighters begin to pay attention to Lyoto Machida’s strategy? “He fought a smart fight, a very technical fight,” Roger stated during post fight interview. He also admitted to going back to his old habits after the 1st round. To his credit Roger Huerta continued to chase Florian but every time he got within striking range Kenny made Roger pay for it with punches, kicks, one grazing elbow, knees, a flying knee and a great front kick to the jaw. What I really liked about… (Full Story)

UFC 87: Florian Doesn’t Finish Fights, but Emerson Does!

UFC 87 lived up to its name as quite a few fighters attempted to seek and destroy their opponents. One fighter who did a good job of seeking, but didn’t quite destroy…Brock Lesnar, but we’ll get to that later. The show started and the Bud Light logo was still in the middle of the canvas, whew. Maybe InBev will drop the sponsorships once everything gets sorted out or maybe Zuffa has a solid contract with an alcoholic beverage aside from Mickey’s. For the sake of the sport, I hope it’s the… (Full Story)

UFC 87, My First Post

Hey, dedicated (or sporadic) readers of MMAOpinion, I’m a new writer for the site and, well, this is my first post. Hopefully you’ll find my stuff entertaining, informative, or both. UFC 87: Seek and Destroy Firstly, who thought of that name? These UFC names just get more and more generic, and eventually they’re going to have to start using names over again (or use the thesauraus.. UFC 104 : Find and Obliterate. It’s coming.. Be warned). When will the Bald Dictator come to his senses… (Full Story)

UFC 87 Preview

MMA Opinion usually does a preview of every UFC event the week of the fight. This time we are doing things a bit different. I have been asked to assist with an exciting new show dedicated to MMA and boxing on Va Beach’s ESPN Radio 1310 (8-9am ET Saturday mornings). If you watch ESPN’s PTI, I will pretty much be playing the role of stat boy, providing the crew with story updates, additional information, and occasional radio time. If you ever have anything that you feel is worthy for the… (Full Story)

Ken-Flo in the Booth!

UFC 83 will be one spectacular event as Matt “The Terror” Serra will look to prove all of the doubters wrong and have his hand raised yet again. Inside the cage spectators and fans will see the same grueling battles that are expected, however on the color commentary will sound a bit different. Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian will step in for the always colorful Joe Rogan. On the same night, Joe Rogan will be hosting his own live comedy show on Showtime and the conflicting schedules will allow… (Full Story)

Who’ston?, Lucky Diaz, Hamill Returns, Karo Falls, Maynard Decides, and Florian Ends Fights

8 second knockouts, ground and pound referee stoppages, impressive Jiu-Jitsu, and it was all free; what else could a MMA fan ask for? UFC Fight Night 13 delivered the goods at a great price tonight on Spike TV at 7PM EST. Although the program was a little long, which was expected, there were a few extra boring segments which made me pause my DVR and take a walk before returning to some MMA action. Spike TV doesn’t offer anything in HD as far as I know, but the surround sound did a decent job of… (Full Story)

Respect the Belt: The Resurgence of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

This is my first post on the site, and I’m glad to be here. Looks like a great group of guys and a solid think-tank. Given my background in the sport, and some of the results from the recent UFC cards, I thought this would be a good way to start this off. There was a time when many a sherdog columnist wrote that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was done, and that the new fighter was a hybrid of wrestling and muay thai, with a little jiu-jitsu and some submission defense. There was a time when there was… (Full Story)
