Remembering Evan Tanner: One Year Later
I found out that Evan Tanner had died the day after my eighteenth birthday, a year ago today. And there are some things that are shocking, that leave the jaw open and the eyes wide. For me, it was the realization that I would never meet Tanner, one of my favorite fighters and by all accounts (and I’ve heard many, now) a profoundly interesting and great human being. The story of Tanner’s arrival in MMA is one that I like to retell, as it’s a standard for working hard, for pushing through and… (Full Story)
The History: Behind the UFC 185 Pound Belt
Of all of the UFC titles, the UFC’s 185 pound belt is one of the most interesting to me, partly because it has one of the briefest histories, and partly because it is one of the few belts that remains as it has always been. As Anderson Silva looks to put the title on the line this weekend against Thales Leites, it is worth a look into the history of a belt that has been held by some of the greatest warriors in the sport. While the UFC “middleweight” belt was the name of the 205 pound belt… (Full Story)
Justin Levens and Wife Found Dead in Condo
MyFoxLA is reporting that a man and woman were found dead in their condo yesterday afternoon. The couple both died from gunshot wounds in a possible murder suicide. A man and a woman were both found dead in a bed in a Laguna Niguel condominium Wednesday. The man, in his 20s, and the woman, in her mid-20s, were found by the woman’s mother, who called 911 about 2:30 p.m., said Jim Amormino of Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators were at the condominium in the 100 block of… (Full Story)
Remembering Evan Tanner
I realize that we have already posted on the passing of Evan Tanner, but I ran across a quote from Evan that I thought was worth mentioning. “I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I feel, I will feel everything. When I love, I will love with everything.” It’s a profound thought, and it’s worth remembering that this is a man who lived his life passionately and always gave us a war… (Full Story)
RIP Evan Tanner 1971 – 2008
The UFC has released an official statement regarding the death of UFC middleweight fighter Evan Tanner. Tanner was recently found dead at his campsite after he left for an extended camping stay and did not return text messages to concerned friends. On what will unquestionably be remembered as one of mixed martial arts’ saddest days, former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner – beloved by fans for his fighting ability and by friends for his free spirit – has passed away at the age of… (Full Story)
Catching up with Evan Tanner
It’s been a little while since we heard anything about Evan Tanner in any MMA news, but it looks like he is still having a good time and enjoying life. In his latest SpikeTV blog, Tanner talks about surfing with his friend and his memories with a surfboard. It’s interesting to read about a professional MMA fighter who is practically living off the land with his motorcycle. Here’s a little blurb from his blog. Check it out here. My friend Jorge and went out and caught a few waves this… (Full Story)
Time to Hang it Up?
In every sport around the world there are times when a superstar will sit in his locker, look down at his hands and ask “is it time”. Sometimes they resist the urge to throw in the towel and move on to coaching or sports casting. For others they can’t resist the feeling to try to get back on top. They want that feeling back, they want their hand raised, or they want that one last chance at a championship ring. Not everyone can be like Brett Favre, come back and make an exceptional run to… (Full Story)
TUF Finale: Low Expectations are Easy to Meet
I won’t say that last night was exciting, but I didn’t expect it to be. I didn’t expect to be impressed with Kendall Grove and Evan Tanner, both of whom were coming off losses (Grove was coming off two, and only on contract because he won TUF 3), and I wasn’t. Still, in defense of the card, the places where it could deliver interesting fights, it did. Dean Lister pulled a guillotine choke out of his big bag of submission grappling tricks, reminding us that he’s back in the UFC… (Full Story)
Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale Preview
The card is set and it is almost time to determine who will take the next step to money, stardom, and a UFC contract. Saturday at 9pm ET Spike will play host to this 3 hour event and after a bad night on the town for Jesse Taylor left him on the outside looking in, the stage is set for Amir Sadollah vs. C.B. Dollaway. The Dollaway twist has lead into a rematch fight that is generating great popularity, but the other big fight on the card will be between Kendall Grove and Evan… (Full Story)
UFC 85: A Serious Contender Born?
Saturday, in many peoples eyes was an event full of problems, numerous withdrawals, the loss of the main event twice and the loss of the UFC’s most marketable fighter in Chuck Liddell, made the event into more of a jumble sale than a fight card. However, it was to be a homegrown British guy who was to send pulses raising in the 02 arena in London. His first round stoppage of Jason Day was more than just a win, it was a sign of intent. From the very start of the fight, Bisping looked like a… (Full Story)
