MMA without the ground game? Instinct Fighting has arrived

“No ground, just pound” is proudly displayed on the fight poster for the upcoming Insticnt Fighting event, the newest creation spawned from modified rules of Mixed Martial Arts. No, it’s not kickboxing and it’s most definitely not tag team MMA, it’s “professional stand-up fighting”. Yep,  everything except wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or any other form of ground combat  is allowed. Once a fighter is thrown, the fight is stopped and everything starts over again. This sure sounds a lot like… (Full Story)

The UFC signs James Toney…really?

Not long after Dana White blasted an extremely athletic Herschel Walker for fighting in Strikeforce by stating that Walker would “would be the first death in the UFC”, he signed stalkerish, overweight, and washed-up boxer James Toney to a multi-fight deal in the UFC. Which is better? An active ex-football standout who still looks to be in better shape than most UFC heavyweight fighters (and already won his MMA debut) or an aging boxer-turner-stalker who wouldn’t leave White alone at… (Full Story)

UFC 107 facts and thoughts

How’d you like Alan Belcher’s pink shorts last night? He just had a baby girl that he and his wife were expecting to be born in January, 2010. Belcher stopped Wilson Gouveia last night and said he’s looking ahead. Stefan Struve needed to have a tooth pulled from his mouthguard after the second round of his fight with Paul Buentello. Struve was knocked down hard in the round, but ultimately won the fight via decision. Who’s next for Jon Fitch? Some people thought that his opponent, Mike… (Full Story)

Hoelzer Reich’s racist hatred apparently acceptable in the UFC

(This article was posted anonymously and may not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinion of all writers of MMA Opinion) Although Dana White has no problem banning walk-out t-shirts for a variety of reasons (including contract disputes), apparently Neo-Nazi clothing company Hoelzer Reich is perfectly acceptable. Joe Brammer sported the shirt in the Octagon last weekend, joining the list of fighters sponsored by these pieces of shit. (Other fighters taking money from these Nazi apologist… (Full Story)

Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale controversies and talking points

Are 12-6 elbows illegal? Have other fighters used them before without warning? Apparently they weren’t legal last night and cost Jon Jones dearly after he smashed Matt Hamill for a good part of the first round. The NSAC used instant replay for the first time in MMA. Did they make the right decision? Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz in TUF 11. Are we excited? Who are the guys behind Hoelzer Reich, the infamous clothing sponsor that uses pre-Nazi and Nazi Germany symbols? Joe Brammer came… (Full Story)

The ‘experts’ discuss Machida vs. Rua

UFC 104 gave us one of the most exciting back and forth main events that we have seen in a long time. It also gave many fans a reason to jump online to discuss why they believe Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua was robbed by the judges after his fight with light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. But now the ‘experts’ are coming back with their reasoning on why Machida ‘clearly’ won the fight. Kevin Iole offers his opinion on the controversial decision to allow Lyoto Machida to retain his light… (Full Story)

The MMA chess match of the year.

You know that cliché “It’s gonna be a chess match” that a lot of fighters used in pre-fight interviews, only to make it more of a cliché (Anderson Silva for instance used it a lot where he should have gone with “it’s gonna be a massacre”). The closest we came to chess matches was with fighters like Randy Couture and GSP where their opponents seemed to have come to play checkers (sorry, but I couldn’t resist! ). Ben Henderson vs Donald Cerrone was the real thing. Cerrone knew that… (Full Story)

Sean Sherk pulls a Nick Diaz and skips drug test

Former UFC champion, and extremely muscular lightweight Sean Sherk has pulled out of his fight with Gleison Tibau. Josh Neer has filled in his spot to fight Tibau at UFC 104. Injuries are common, so there’s  no surprise that Sherk had to pull out of a fight. But, once you learn that Sherk claims he was injured only after he was schedule to take a pre-fight drug test for the CSAC, it starts to look a little suspicious. Dave Meltzer has all the details: Word of the injury got out on the… (Full Story)

The Sean Salmon Debate

Earlier this week, fighter Sean Salmon posted up an entry to his blog on MMA Junkie. In this blog entry, he talked about some recent personal battles, drinking problems, and a predicament that he recently faced when being asked to fight for two promotions in a short period of time. Now it’s June 3, and I am flying back to Columbus, Ohio, from Manchester, England, where I was training with Wolfslair helping some of the team’s fighters prepare for their upcoming bouts. The plan was to fly in on… (Full Story)
