Another MMA spinoff: Shock Fights (with tasers)

MMA writer (and photographer) Bauzen over at MiddleEasy.com just posted up an article on one of the most ridiculous MMA spinoff’s I have ever seen and I’m still reeling from just how bad this is. It’s far worse than YAMMA Pit Fighting, more ridiculous than XARM, and makes Instinct Fighting (“All Pound, No Ground”) look like childs play. Welcome, my MMA friends, to Shock Fights. Here’s how to play: Attach 3,000,000 volt tasers to your gloves Remove any rules Try not to kill each… (Full Story)

MMA without the ground game? Instinct Fighting has arrived

“No ground, just pound” is proudly displayed on the fight poster for the upcoming Insticnt Fighting event, the newest creation spawned from modified rules of Mixed Martial Arts. No, it’s not kickboxing and it’s most definitely not tag team MMA, it’s “professional stand-up fighting”. Yep,  everything except wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or any other form of ground combat  is allowed. Once a fighter is thrown, the fight is stopped and everything starts over again. This sure sounds a lot like… (Full Story)

The UFC signs James Toney…really?

Not long after Dana White blasted an extremely athletic Herschel Walker for fighting in Strikeforce by stating that Walker would “would be the first death in the UFC”, he signed stalkerish, overweight, and washed-up boxer James Toney to a multi-fight deal in the UFC. Which is better? An active ex-football standout who still looks to be in better shape than most UFC heavyweight fighters (and already won his MMA debut) or an aging boxer-turner-stalker who wouldn’t leave White alone at… (Full Story)

Iowa needs better MMA regulation

Not long after the debacle in Virginia where the sanctioning body in the state, the VDPOR, had botched its third pro event, the Des Moines Register has an interesting article about the dangers of sanctioning amateur fights in states that have no in-state athletic commission to oversee MMA bouts. The author brings up past fights in which inexperienced fighters were badly injured after fights in the state. In one case, a 17 year old was allowed to fight even though he did not have parental… (Full Story)
