Weekly Women’s MMA Wrap-Up

In a startling upset, Shana Olsen (2-0, pictured left) defeated Kaitlin Young (4-3) by 2nd round TKO (1:52) at Ironman MMA. (Full fight play-by-play is available on this site). Olsen, who was 4.4 lbs. over weight for the 140 lb. catchweight bout, indicated in her post-fight interview that she’d like to fight at 145.

In another upset, Amanda Nunes (3-1) defeated Vanessa Porto (10-4) via TKO at 5:00 of R2 at Samurai Fight Combat 2: Warriors Return.

Amber Powell (2-2) defeated Shimone Brooks (0-1) via 2nd round TKO at 3:45 at Combat League: Season’s Beatings.

Carina Damm (13-3) defeated Daiana Silva (0-2) via TKO at 3:27 of the 3rd round at Bitetti Combat 5.

Josee Aupry (1-0) defeated Anna Barone (0-1) via TKO in just 39 seconds of the first round at Wreck MMA: Fights for the Troops.

In what is being widely reported as a controversial stoppage due to miscommunication, Saori Ishioka (8-4) defeated Sally Krumdiack (7-3) via submission (armbar) at 2:45 of R1 at Jewels: 6th Ring. (Note: Sally missed weight by .4 kg or about .88 lb for this fight).

In other Jewels results, unanimous decision wins were scored by Asami Kodera (5-3) [defeating Kikuyo Ishikawa (2-1)], Shizuka Sugiyama (6-1) [defeating Yukiko "KO" Ozeki (0-1)], Mari Kaneko (9-8-1) [defeating Rina Tomita (2-3)], Misaki “Patora” Ozawa (1-4) [finally winning a fight by  defeating Akiko Inoue (2-6)] and Yoko Yamada (6-1) [defeating Miyoko Kusaka (0-1)]. Two other Jewels fights were ended by armbar, with Mika Nagano (5-2) defeating Yuko Kagoshima (1-1) at 3:56 into the second round and Alexandra Sanchez (4-1) defeating Tomoko Morii (1-2) at 3:39 of round

TRAIN WITH KYRA GRACIE!

According to an article in Gracie Magazine, Kyra Gracie will be holding a Jiu-Jitsu camp between February 24th and March 3rd in Rio de Janeiro. The training program, restricted to women, will include breakfast, hotel stay,tourism excursions, hiking, boxing and private or semi-private lessons with Kyra herself in addition to jiu-jitsu training. TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Catching up with her only unavenged grappling loss, “Lethal” Lana Stefanac won the Grappler’s Quest World Series Pro Division in Vegas on December 12th by defeating ting Grapplers Quest/ADCC 2007-2008 world champion Penny Thomas. Other female MMA fighters who placed include Tonya Evinger (who scored 2nd in her division) and Michelle Ould (who also got 2nd in her division), as well as up-and-comer Amanda Lucas, who placed first in womens no-gi. (Lucas and Stefanac are both from Trinity, as is Sam Wilson who won the women’s beginner no-gi class D in addition to scoring second place in the women’s no-gi beginner absolute (Shannon Reed from 10th Planet won 1st). The FILA Grappling World Championships took place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Saturday. MMA fighters scoring medals include Lisa Ward in the 50kg division (who came in second to Felicia Oh), Jessica Aguilar taking first in the 59kg 130 lbs. division (Tara LaRosa took second) and in the 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Shayna Baszler got silver and Miesha  Tate took 4th place (with 2004 Olympic women’s freestyle silver medalist Sara McMann in 1st and Sheila Bird earning bronze).

In Gi grappling results, Jessica Aguilar got bronze in her (55kg) division, Tara LaRosa came in 1st (59kg) and Shayna Baszler got silver in the 63 kg/138.75 lbs. division.  Tara LaRosa came in 1st place at the Gi Grappling Open, followed by Canadians Alison Tremblay and Alaina Hardie. LaRosa also earned a bronze medal in the women’s No-Gi Grappling Open.

UPCOMING FIGHT

Nova Uniao fighter Claudia Gadelha (2-0) will be fighting Davina Maciel (2-1) at Vision Fight. This is Maciel’s first fight since October 2007.
