Vasquez vs. Davis for Affliction: Trilogy
By Josh Stein on Jul 03, 2009
After defeating the incredibly unimpressive late replacement of Mark Kergosian (0-1 MMA) on the bizarre Ultimate Chaos event , Javier Vasquez (13-2 MMA) will look to return to action August 1st in Los Angeles again the American Jiu-Jitsu Academy’s L.C. Davis (13-2 MMA).
Davis appeared on the Affliction: Day of Reckoning card, winning a decision over Bao Quach (16-9-1 MMA), even after being nearly submitted with a rear naked choke. In his most recent bout, he went to Japan on short notice to fight in the Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix, but lost a decision to Michihiro Omigawa (6-7-1 MMA).
Vasquez went AWOL from the MMA scene after winning a split decision over Rob Emerson (9-7-0-1 MMA, 2-1-0-1 UFC), of TUF fame and Orange County gang (if there is such a thing) infamy. He returned in 2007 with two wins, and fought for the first time since the folding of Elite XC (where he won a bout in the organization and a bout in the smaller ShoXC event) in Ultimate Chaos.
Initially, Vasquez was set to fight UFC veteran Din Thomas (24-8 MMA, 5-4 UFC), but Kergosian was brought in after Thomas pulled out of the fight. Vasquez finished Kergosian in 19 seconds with a guillotine choke. Though Vasquez and Davis have identical records, their opponents are hardly identical, and Vasquez may emerge as a favorite as a result of bouts against superior competition.
