CB Dollaway Means Business
By Yael Grauer on Jul 01, 2009
Anyone who thinks wrestlers make for boring fights has never seen CB Dollaway. Explosive and dynamic, CB is the definition of effective aggression in the Octagon. Although he is an All American wrestler, the majority of Dollaway’s wins have come by way of knockout. I caught up with him at Arizona Combat Sports to discuss his upcoming fight, and he was all business– focused as ever.
CB is coming off of two 1st round wins against skilled opponents in the UFC and is scheduled to fight Tom Lawlor at UFC 100 on July 11th. So here we’ve got a future elite level fighter, certainly one of my favorites, scheduled to fight a guy who is best known for pissing on his own fruit salad. “I don’t think he’s the best fighter I’ve fought so far,” CB said, “but I think he’s definitely up there somewhere. He’s a 3-time NWCA National Champion wrestler, so he’s got some skills. We should match up well.”
The former Sun Devil wrestler did admit that he thought his wrestling would be on a higher level than Lawlor’s. “Division 1 wrestling is a different level than the club teams, wrestling for college, so I definitely think my wrestling should dominate his,” he said.
Although general consensus appears to be that CB will totally run through the guy, he is certainly not underestimating his opponent. ”I’m just fighting whoever they put in front of me. You never know what’ll happen. You’ve gotta fight the fight.”
I first met CB last November when he was helping run a wrestling station at Jamie Varner’s charity seminar. I was struck by how incredibly approachable and helpful he was, confirming my suspicion that the common misperception of the guy is based solely on media spin. Even with prodding, CB had no choice words about Tom Lawlor… not even his bad haircut. “To each his own,” CB said. ”I’m not gonna talk shit about my opponent, pretty much,” he said. “That’s something I don’t do.” CB Dollaway, ladies and gentlemen. All class, as always. Though I’m sure he’ll be all business in the cage….
CB DOLLAWAY’S UFC 100 FIGHT PREDICTIONS
George St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves
“I definitely think GSP is the better fighter, the more skilled fighter. I think he should come out on top, but there’s obviously that chance he could get knocked out after what you saw in the Serra fight. And I definitely think Alves has power and the skill to do that. So I definitely see George on top, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he got knocked out.”
Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping:
“I’m gonna go with Henderson just because he’s a vet and he’s got that big right hand and his wrestling should be able to dominate Bisping. And on the feet, he’s been there with some of the best guys in Pride, and everywhere else. I don’t see Bisping being able to offer Dan anything he hasn’t seen before.”
Brock Lesnar v. Frank Mir
“I definitely think Lesnar should have this one but I’ve got to see what he’s learned since the last time they met. In the first one I thought he was dominating Mir ’til he got stood up; Steve Mazzagatti thought he was hitting him in the back of the head. But I think Lesnar’s gotten a little more experience and had a few fights in between so I definitely see Lesnar coming out on top… but there’s always that chance he could be submitted.”

Typical wrestler responses (sorry). I agree with the Hendo vs. Bisping, but GSP (who is an adopted wrestler)vs. Thaigo and the Lesnar v.s Mir predictions. CB may be a decent fighter but he is a goofus and bias. Mir did not get lucky its called Brazilian Ju Jitsu and guys have been using it since UFC 1 to tap “dumb” wrestlers who know no better (not saying all wrestlers are dumb). Plus guys like CB always talk about their wrestling background and how its better than his so they should win. Well GSP never wrestled college and he smashed through Koscheck and out wrestled him. And I am a former wrestler, but I know the difference between MMA and wrestling.
