Lee Murray Rearrested

I guess the wikipedia editors called Lee’s fight too early. While Lee, who was released from Moroccan prison after a court ruled that he was a citizen of the North African nation and (therefore) could not be extradited to the U.K. Murray is listed towards the top of many wanted lists in the U.K., after stealing £53 million (today, about $92 million) from the Securitas depot in 2006.

The Moroccan government will try Murray for the crime, despite the fact that it was committed in a different country, per the request of the United Kingdom, who filed a request to ensure that he was rearrested.

Five of the seven suspects in the initial Securitas robbery were arrested and tried in the United Kingdom. Lee’s arrest in Morocco was a result of being caught with cocaine. Whether or not Murray will be successfully charge in Morocco is not clear, or whether there will be an eventual extradition (there have been a dispute of the terms of extradition between the two governments). Still, should make for a great story. We’ll see if this puts a hold on the movie until we can figure out how it ends.

For those who don’t remember, the reason why Lee Murray (8-2-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is worth caring about stems from a bar fight between Murray and then UFC champion Tito Ortiz in which, according to Pat Miletich, “Lee lit him up like a Christmas tree, dropped him, then punted his head like a football.” While the football punt is not a legal attack in the UFC, it still would have been awesome to watch.
