UFC 91 – Short of One Million PPV Buys

F4W Online is reporting that the numbers for UFC 91 were close to a million PPV buys, but not quite there at 800,000. They are also reporting that the show made 4.8 million dollars at the gate, as previously reported. Out of the 14,272 in the building, 10,845 paid to see Brock Lesnar defeat Randy Couture via TKO to claim the title as the UFC Heavyweight champ.

While it’s doubtful we’ll see numbers like these for any upcoming UFC events, it shows that wrestlers like Brock Lesnar, coupled with known stars like Randy Couture can help pack bars and drive MMA fans to purchase a PPV at $45-55. It also means that Dana White recognizes the drawing power of wrestlers and other well known non-MMA entertainment stars in the UFC. Who will be next?

I am surprised this PPV did not break a million. It had the hype, the drama, the David and Goliath matchup, and the WWE crowd excited. As a fan of both WWE and the UFC, this is on of the few PPVs I chose to order this year.

As hyped up and marketed as Liddell vs. Ortiz 2 was, I felt this one would easily shatter those numbers, maybe the casual fan hype wasn’t there.

Anyways, it still shows that the #1 PPV draw of 2008 is Brock Lesnar. All three PPVs he was in broke 800,000 buys and he will continue to do so.
