Update: Shane Ott Critically Injured in Motorcycle Accident

Update – 11/10 @ 2:16PM: Shane is now responding to voices, but may still undergo more surgeries. A blood drive is being held at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center in Reading, PA on November 22nd from 2pm – 5pm.

Update – 11/05 @ 11:38AM: According to FiveOuncesofPain, Shane is still in an induced coma and in critical, yet stable condition. He is breathing on his own and the doctors are hoping to have his leg fitted with a prosthetic limb once he recovers.

Update – 11/04 @ 12:37PM: A family friend met with Shane and reported that he is still in critical, but stable condition. He will need to undergo numerous surgeries.

Update – 11/04 @ 8:39AM: According to his daughter, Shane is undergoing surgery again this morning.

Update – 3:25PM: Shane lost his leg as a result of the accident. Friends are looking to create a fundraiser for him to help offset the cost of the surgery and his hospital stay. He is still in critical condition.

Another Update – 2:42PM: Shane was moved from a hospital in Reading, PA to another hospital in Philadelphia. His surgery was successful and they’re hoping for a successful recovery. We’re keeping Shane in our thoughts as he battles for his life.

Update: MMA Opinion was contacted with good news. Shane is still alive, but in critical condition.

Ex-IFL fighter Shane Ott passed away on Sunday morning due to injuries sustained after crashing his motorcycle. Jon Murphy from The Underground explains the accident and his friendship with Ott:

Not sure how many of you guys knew of Shane. The hardcore guys, East Coast MMA scene people, and some guys on here I know personally and so did Shane.

Just want to take a moment and inform you guys of his passing yesterday. He was in a terrible motorcycle accident early Sunday morning. From what I hear, doc’s did all they could to save him, but his injuries were to severe and he eventually succumb to his injuries.

This is a sad day for me as I got to know Shane quite well. We were training partners, but more importantly, we were friends. Shane has battled many demons in his life. It was evident to those who didn’t even know him just by taking a glance at his tattoos. Dude had ‘HARD LUCK’ tattooed across his knuckles if that makes it anymore evident. Shane was a bad-ass wrestler who was on fire picking up MMA and jiu jitsu. His ability to learn and apply was incredible, but his strength made him all the more fearsome. Strongest person I’ve ever rolled/sparred with, period.

Shane was in a rough period in his life and actually climbing out of it by taking steps back to the gym. Most people on here (that know of Shane) will remember his Haselrig fight, but Shane was truly so much better than that. Prior to organized MMA, Shane had done a lot of street fighting and harnessing a lot of anger and regret in a negative way. When Shane got to our gym, you could see him come alive and be himself for a brief period from 6 to 9 pm Monday thru Friday. He loved to train. Sure, he’d bitch just like the rest of us if we were tired, cranky, but we did it, he did it.

Just wanted to publicly say good bye to a great friend, fighter, and father…

RIP Shane Ott.

Pls. people if you have any type of respect for shane and his family,
    STOP RESPONDING TO COON!
I know its hard to bite your tounge but, Fight the urge and
    STOP RESPONDING TO COON!
He/It left one message and already there were 7 people who responded back to him,
I dout the Coon is even lurking about to read your comments…
I know it was a direct slap to the face of shane and anyone who knows him, but this blog is quickly losing focas on the topic at hand! –>”SHANE”
This blog is for Shane,,, Not who can beat down the coon the hardest with words!
So let that sink in good and deep, before anyone responds to the coon again!!!
And remember Coons comment will do as much damage, as people will let it!!!
    STOP RESPONDING TO COON!!!

  2. anonymous cracker says:

Thank you Brant,,, You should also delete anyones comment who responded to coon!!! along w/ this one!

  3. Jessie W says:

Has anyone heard an update on Shane’s condition this week? How is he doing? Could someone close to the family please post an update for us? Thank you so much!!!

  4. A Family Member says:

OK now that I have composed myself and agree with some of the other responders and that is all said and DONE…Whew…My thoughts are daily with Shane, his children and closer relatives and closer friends. Shane is from what I hear improving little day by day and that is so wonderful to hear. Even though I have my own demons in my own inner circle to deal with , I have not stopped praying for others. I hope Shane makes a full recovery and I am so thrilled to see all the positive things that are being done for him. I am going to try and make some of the events that are going on and do what I can for him both mentally and physically. God Bless Shane !!

  5. Julz says:

thank you Leiko for that and Brandt ^5 but the sad part is that jerk will probably just come in here under YET another ” Annonomous” name cause IT ( cant say it is a true human ) is too damn YELLOW to say who he or she maybe and you know that is how COWARDS operate , anyway like it has been stated here by many ignorance is BLISS … so no matter what we come here to talk about it should be aimed towards the recovery for Shane and to let his family know that we are with them not just for yesterday or today but for al the tomorrows as well and to the “family ” member he is making progress and even if it is not a full recovery it is better than what was expected when he first got there so ALL HOPE and PRAYER is working in his favor , besides you know how strong the determination is with that family so would you think any differently? (headstrong) people dont give up the fight that easily they fight even harder …. and for some having a HARD exterior is not always a bad thing ,most tend to do that to keep peole at bay not out of spite but perhaps to protect their feelings , I know for me I am a bitch when it comes down to feelings plain and simple because I CHOOSE to be , been hurt by many and just can not afford to trust unless I know for damn sure I can trust you and I warn you shit on me once fine shit on me twice run like HELL and that is just how it is . I have many who love me cause the other side of me is just down right retarded and do not take life serious or to the extreme it is what it is but mess with me or my family then you get what you gave and then some . That is why i believe US women should run the country piss us off on one of the those days DROP THE BOMB no questions asked (that was a joke guys) but seriously some just can not help for the way they are because they were never taught how to be … Still no excuse to be an asshole but some just cant help themselves and those are the ones you want to bitch slap into next week . As i stated with my beliefs in God I am not religous but spiritual and what goes around comes around it is the nature of the beast if you think about it . So I rather kill you with kindness and burn your butt with my intelligence rather than stoop to a level that is compared to whale shit . Does that makes sense ? Cause stooping is something I will not do for ANYONE . Like with Shane there is only so much one will take and for his stature I would say this JUST DONT START and you can walk away with your face . so for that COON God Bless him cause attitude does not go very far when you are filled with so much hatred . Ok so did anyone hear anything as of today and as the saying goes no news is good news so hopefully it will be another good day for all involved .
Ok have to do some work here and then time for my pill which I know will make me sick so you all have a wonderful weekend and keep praying not only for Shane but all of us as well .
    Peace and God Bless

  6. Leiko says:

Last I heard from Brad he was told they are seeing improvement and he has opened his eyes and they were bringing him down off his meds but I haven’t heard anything else. If I do I’ll be sure to post.
Also wanted to let everyone know there was a “Thank you” in the newspaper today from his family and close friends which mentioned a care fund which has been set up and anyone wanting to help can make donations to:

    Shane Ott Care Fund
    4950 Kutztown Road
    Temple, PA 19560

  7. Julz says:

Oh how cool was that in the Reading Eagle ? AND really awesome that Shane is improving day to day , so they are starting to wwean him off meds? That is ALWAYS a good sign and to be honest this is the time when all need to come together to support him and his family as the awareness will become more available to him , I hope that he does realize that this is worth a fight once he is no longer in the coma type situation and that he got this far dont stop now keep the fight going and who knows I was always told there are reasons we go through what we do and there are lessons in the making so his path took a different road I am sure with his determination and head strong ways he would be a wonderful inspiration to others , it might not have been his plan but it was the big guys plan so bigger and better things must be around the corner . He is truly a miracle and hopefully will continue to be a “teacher” to all out here in the world . The lesson so far is that nothing can take you down unless you let it . Still praying for all his family and hope to get to at least 1 function for him and I am still trying to work on that benefit . Prayers with you all OTT family and that means ALL THE OTTS either thorough marriage , cousin what ever this indirectly effects you all and I am praying that you all keep the faith and stand by his side .
    Peace and God Bless …

    thank you,
    alexis

  14. ALEXIS says:

We want to thank everyone so much for going out tonight and supporting our dad in Kutztown for the pasta dinner and for everyone who is putting so much work into the show at The Silo. We appreciate everything that everyone is doing and all of the get well wishes for our dad. He is so strong and is fighting everyday, anyone who knows him knows that he won’t give up! He is still in critical condition but has come so far. We love him so much and it is soooo nice to see how many people care about him!
    Thanks for everything!
    Alexis and Alston Ott

  15. Julz says:

    WOW ALEXIS
I know you are just a child here but you need to really to calm down , I KNOW this is not my space and for your information I have not been here in over a week and am having problems with someone using my name here since my computer has been hacked into , as for it not being my space this is a PUBLIC forum and no guidelines as to what can be written here , I do not mean to be mean but it is NOT just dedicated to one purpose or then guidelines need to be changed then , THE POINT here is that we ALL care for your dad and WE all are praying for him and the entire family IF you look at all I did write I always always ask is there any improvement and that I am still praying for you all . There have been many many more things said here and I not your target but if you feel the need to target me WITHOUT even knowing me go right ahead , just so you do know I also have been working on getting a fund raiser together just do not need to be in the spot light for it … SO IF that is the attitude from you well then I wish you and your family the best and will continue to pray for your father and your family I do not see how I can be hurting your feelings when nothing I EVER SAID WAS NEGATIVE and just so you do have the situation straight here many from this forum do EMAIL me and ask my advice about how to pray JUST thought it was easier to write here then to reply to ALL the email I am recieving …
GOD BLESS YOU and try to not take so much to heart atleast I have said anything horrbile towards any of your family I have known JR and Joyce and your father many many years to ever insult any one of your family and as far as that does go I have done nothing more than defend …. and I will continue to keep in touch with other family members
I guess I should not have indulged to reply to a child but I am also not going to be ridiculed for this either .

  16. Jill says:

These is not the time or place for the back and forth that just occured and you are right you should not have responed to a child. She may have over reacted a bit but she is LIVING this right now and has had to see things that no child should ever have to see ANY parent go through. I know you mean well and that is appreciated but I think that she is just being protective of her dad and is dealing with alot. Alexis is a great kid and if you met her under differnet circumstances you would see that, she is hurting right now and with some many stories going around and people talking you need to understand that she has no idea who she can and can’t trust. I think it is great that this has given everyone an outlet to talk because I know that people care and are concered for Shane but like I said before everyone in the family is on edge right now and I hope you understand that. We all appreciate the love, support and well wishes
    please keep them up.
Thanks! Jill – Alexis Ott’s mom

  17. Brandt says:

    Jill,
Thanks for the comment and for posting exactly what I wanted to say.

Please respect the Ott family. If you want to join any kind of social network to talk about MMA related stuff, check out KnowYourMMA.com and talk there. Otherwise, please keep the comments in this thread on topic or else they will be deleted.

    Thanks everyone!

PS – I’m going to talk to a few MMA gyms in the area to see if we can organize a grappling event for Shane as well. It’s MMA-related and all proceeds can be given directly to the hospital to pay medical expenses.

I will post updates on MMA Opinion.

  18. Julz says:

    Jill
    I agree with you 100 percent ….

(This has been edited by MMA Opinion staff as per the comment guidelines on this thread. Please keep the thread on topic about Shane Ott and his family, not regarding previous comments or accusations)

… once again I APPOLOGIZE so if someone out there would have the courtesy to at least keep me updates on his recovery I would like that cause I will not come back HOWEVER I WILL still work on having some kind of fund raiser for Shane after the holidays and donate the money with out recognition for it .
God Bless you all Happy Holiday and Peace be with you all .
Not sure it will do any good here but ((((((((ALexis))))))))) keep the faith and hold your head up high .

    JULZ

  19. Julz says:

Brandt please post this then I am done …I see that via e mail my comment was edited and this is to Jill I understand to a degree how upset she is but I would never say anything to hurt any one in your family and I have not said anything so far here to , I will also appologize to you as well . If your daughter needs to talk to someone outside of family she can e mail me , I work with kids with problems not saying she has a problem problem but just to talk and get things out that they might not be able to with family …. I extend that offer to her or you or to anyone from your family or even friends here …. I never meant to take the context of this site and use it for a gossip page just did not like somethings that were said to or about Shane and allowed a part of “old” to let that be known how I felt and thought I was protecting Alexis from that I truly appologize to you all .
    God Bless and Peace

  20. Thank you. Please no more back and forth “he said, she said” on an article like this. If it was anything else, I wouldn’t care, but this is a comment thread regarding the near-death of a fighter and father who lives only a half hour from me.

Please keep all future comments on topic for the sake of Shane’s family and those who are looking for daily updates.

  21. friend says:

To the whole Ott family, I extend my sincere thoughts and prayers to all of you. I as a daughter, sister, and also a mother can’t even begin to imagine the situation that you are all dealing with. These are the times that at not one minute or one day do you take you life and what you have for granted. I check everyday for updates hoping everyday that things get better. I know many people are concerned for Shane’s well being and that many many prayers are with Shane and his family. God Bless you!

  22. Julz says:

Ok Brandt check my IP address now I called phone company to have it changed and locked did it work yet and to all who are sending me threatening EMAIL PLEASE STOP cause all mail is now blocked since it is clear no one will listen that I was hacked into my wireless satellite that is on you wow to think some are so judgemental and can not fathom that hackers DO EXSIST and to to lady who said I am proably COONS that is really really pathetic Brandt I said I was not coming back to forum and I have only to defend myself but there is just no getting to some people and for that I am condemend so to all Otts I really do appologize for the hacker and the comments they made here to those that do know me KNOW ME

  23. Athena Marie says:

Although I didn’t know Shane as well as the rest of you, I knew him enough that everytime I saw him no matter where it was or who we were with he would always take the time to say “hi” to me even if it was only for a second during passing. Shane, just because I don’t know you as much as everyone else doesn’t mean that you are not in my prayers. My brother Jay whom you know from Paradise and I keep each other updated as the news rolls about your condition and we wish nothing for the best for you. You are one of the toughest S.O.B.’s I know and I know you can do this. You have so much love and support around you, you have always been a fighter and we look forward to seeing you soon, until then keep up the good fight!
Oh, just so you know I am saving my foot for you. No one else will be tattooing my foot but you. No matter how long it takes my foot is yours.
A human canvas for your art,
    Athena Marie

  24. a friend says:

I just wanted to say that I also am not a close friend of Shane but my husband and I both know him and he is the kind of person that is not exactly forgettable and even though we aren’t great friends we both think very highly of Shane and are hoping the very best for him. I come on here frequently to find out information on how he’s doing and what fundraisers there are. So please keep that information coming and not this other nonsense. I have a 16 year old son who wants to get a tatoo and Shane is the only person I will take him to, so he will just have to wait until he is better so that he can do it. (i’ve never wanted one myself but if Shane will do it maybe I will change my mind) Alexis stay strong and don’t sweat the small stuff (it’s not worth it)

  25. OLD FRIEND says:

JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT SHANE IS IN MY FAMILIES HEARTS AND PRAYERS, AND WE ARE HOPING FOR ONLY THE BEST FOR HIM. HE WAS THERE WHEN MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY 10 YEARS AGO(MY HUSBAND AND HIM WERE GOOD FRIENDS GROWING UP AND THEIR FAMILIES CLOSE)BUT ANYWAYS MY DAUGHTER ASKS ABOUT HIM ALL THE TIME BECAUSE SHE KNOWS THAT WAS ONE OF HER DADDYS FRIENDS, AND WHEN WE SAW HIM ACOUPLE OF TIMES OUT SOMEWHERE SHE WOULD JUST LIGHT UP. PROBABLY BECAUSE SHE DOESNT REMEMBER MUST OF HER DAD BUT TO JUST SEE A PART OF HER DADS PAST WAS ENOUGH FOR HER TO MAKE HER DAY!!!( SHES ONLY 13) TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS.

  26. friend says:

  27. BRAD FELTENBERGER says:

ALL RIGHT HERE IT IS “COON” YOU WILL BE FOUND!!!! ANY ONE ELSE OUT THERE, I WILL MAKE IT MY NEW MISSION TO PERSONALLY FIND YOU IF THIS KIND OF SHIT CONTINUES AND HURTFUL WORDS CONTINUE TO HURT THE PEOPLE THAT I CARE AT A LEVEL I HAVE NO WORDS FOR. Now that that is said I am 1000′s miles away I don’t get to check this sight often I know alot of you are putting you hearts on this sight, Thank you, I am unable to be there for the Ott family like I should be and it is eatting me alive. So please lets all just post happy thoughts and prayers. If you have something negetive to say my e-mail is brad.feltenberger1@us.army.mil, PLEASE SEND IT THERE!!

  28. Brad says:

Sorry for my previous comment but I had to get it out. Thank you everyone for keeping me up to date. It is great to hear the improvments.

Shane if you get to read these, which I am sure you will, stay strong keep fitting and stay positive. I will see you around XMAS

  29. Debbie Beidler says:

    HI,

I went to high school with Shane and heard about his accident from the prayer meeting I attended for him and a few other Governor Mifflin students. It broke my heart because as I didn’t know him since High School, I remember him in high school being such a good person. To Shane’s family, he is in my prayers and obviously lots of people’s prayers. Believe in God’s power to touch him and restore him back to health. I pray that when he is restored, that he’s stronger than before it happened. I pray for his spirit to be lifted as I can only imagine once he realizes the extent of his injuries it will be so incredibly difficult. Just unite together as family and friends and believe for his complete healing better than all the doctor’s even best prognosis.

Please let Shane know I asked about him (Mason was my maiden name) and will continue to pray for him and everyone that is supporting him especially his precious kids.

    Debbie Beidler

  30. Brad Felt says:

You moose how you feeling? Happy Turkey day. I hope you get some turkey today, Gus said you were asking for real food. Stay strong an possitive. You are in my prayers today and everyday. Love ya man.

  31. Brad Felt says:

Hey Shane, let you know Army thanksgiving chow was not all that, but then again it never is. Jill next time Shane is awake just tell him to remember the Green Valare from high school and all those nights we just didn’t make it home. That will bring a smile to his face.

  32. Rodney says:

I have known Shane a very long time and was very shocked to hear of his accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his children. Stay strong Shane, I know you will pull through this.

Also is there an address where we can send get well wishes.

  33. Jessie W says:

Does anyone have a recent update on how Shane is progressing? Is he out of critical yet, anymore surguries scheduled, etc? How is he, does anyone know? I don’t know any family members, so just praying every day that he is doing better and better…. thanks, Jessie (friend of Shane)

  34. Alexis says:

Ijust wanted to let everyone know how much we all apprecaite how many people showed up for the blood drive, it was amazing! I know everyone is concerned about how he is doing, so here is a little update. He is still in critical condition but is stable and getting stronger everyday! He has had MANY surgeries and has many more to go. My dad is responding to us and we are so grateful for that! He has fought so hard to get where he is and continues to fight everyday. Words can’t express how proud I am of him. We appreciate all of the posts on here and some of them really make me smile :) Thank you to everyone for your concern and prayers it mean so much to our family.

I just wanted to say hi to the family and Shane and my thoughts are with you all. I went to school with Shane and he always had a hi and a smile when I would run into him places. He is a fighter, but we all know that, this is the fight of his life and he will do this as he does anything in life he will come out with flying colors and be the winner over this. My thoughts are with you all and it is nice to get the updates on his condition.

We want to thank everyone who worked so hard to put The Silo concert together and everyone who came and supported it. This Christmas means so much to us because we got the only thing that we asked for and that is our dad here with us and getting stronger everyday! He has a long road ahead, but has come so far already. Everytime he smiles at us we know that it is going to be O.K. We appreciate all of the support and prayers that has been given to our dad, we love him so much! We want to wish you a very Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

I co-own a karate & kickboxing school with my partner, Irv Althouse. Every 3 months we have an amateur kickboxing/Muay Thai fight night. Our next show is January 31st, 2009 at the Hamburg Field House in Hamburg, PA. We spoke with Shane Ott’s mother and the family will be present at the event, as a portion of the proceeds will be going to Shane’s recovery fund. We have two title fights that evening, and normally have 8-10 additional bouts. These are sanctioned events through the United State Kickboxing Alliance. We run a good, clean show. Don’t underestimate the amateurs! If you could mention this event on your website it would be greatly appreciated. As you know, Shane’s medical bills are astronomical. Any additional info can be found on our website at Althousekarate.com. Thank you! Louann

Shane and I havebeenthru alot of good times and bad since we were young and I love him with all my heart and soul. He has to mentally prepare for the next round in his fight and he will pull thru and be the champ iknow he is. Chunk and I r prayin for u Moose!!!!!

I’m so glad to hear that Shane is doing better. I too went to school with Shane. Our first meeting was in Mrs. Hafer’s kindergarden class. He was always so strong and always had a nice smile for me. If the past is any predictor of the future, I know he will persevere. He is truly a champ. Thank you so much for these updates. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and friends.
